Decorating With Light

Posted by admin under INTERIOR DESIGN

Modern houses tend to have good, bright lights throughout, whereas in years gone by, they were literally reading by the midnight oil. Lighting is a very important element in any room design, so as you layout your space, remember to include lighting plans.
Lamp Light
There are three basic categories of lighting. First there is ambient lighting which provides the lighting throughout the room. Then there is task lighting, which, as the name implies, is a lamp that lights up a single area for a specific task. Then there is accent lighting, and this type of lighting adds drama and focus to different areas within a room. You can use lamps for all three types of lighting. Lamps that can be attached to the wall with adjustable arms are great for task lighting, and they will also work for accent lighting. Floor and table lamps tend more towards satisfying the ambient lighting requirements for a room.

Understanding Light
When you are trying to figure how many lamps you should include in your room design, first evaluate your overhead lighting. Usually this consists of a ceiling fixture, track lighting or recessed lighting. Some older homes have no overhead lighting at all. If you do not have any overhead lighting at all in a space, the lighting can feel very uneven and it can even unbalance the design of a room.

To determine what kind of lighting you will need you will have to consider a couple of things. First of all look at how much natural lighting a room gets. Then consider the color of paint on the walls; dark colors absorb more light. You also want to consider the paint finishes. Glossy paint reflects more light and brightens a room, where flat paint simply absorbs light.

As you are designing your room, consider how much light you will in that room, and then you can add the required lamps into your overall room design.

Lamp Selection
Selecting lamps can be hard. When you see lamps in another person’s house, you generally do not even give them a second glance. However, when you go to choose your own lamps, there are just so many to choose from.

For example, if you are installing task lighting by the bedside, you may opt to mount task lighting on the wall, or you may opt for a table lamp. Make sure that the lamps can accommodate a three-way 150-watt bulb for the perfect lighting combination for a bedroom.

As if it is not hard enough zeroing in on the perfect lamp, now there are hundreds of light bulb colors and types from which to choose. Look for incandescent lights with a soft and warm glow. The fluorescent bulbs tend to give off a harsh and bright light.

As you select lampshades for your lamp, remember that if you need a really bright light then you will want to use shades
that are also pale colors, while if you are going more for mood lighting, then you can use darker shades.
