Interior Designer as a Profession

If you have always had a flair for interior design and help friends turn their homes into masterpieces, perhaps you should consider turning your natural talent into a career. The business of interior decorating can be very lucrative and rewarding for those that know what they’re doing.

If you have an eye for decorating and are very good at it, you will go far in the interior design world. Just like many other businesses though, you do have to be able to adapt to the styles each individual client will have. You will need to learn how to put your taste aside so that it doesn’t try to influence your client. Let their unique style show in their home or office so that your clients will come back to you for more.

To be an interior design professional, you don’t have to go to school but it is recommended. You will want to have a degree because it will make you look more reputable and knowledgeable about this chosen field. If you want to make a lot of money doing interior decorating, school will help you get there. People are more willing to trust decorators with a degree because they know they have the basic background and know-how to get the job done. Hiring a New York Interior Designer?

Here’s Your Checklist:

Qualified? Make sure the interior designer is properly certified by New York State, and accredited (ASID is the main organization for Interior Designers).

Experienced? Check references and look at photographs of the designer’s recent work. Sites like cityhammer.com are a good place to start, but most designers will gladly show you their portfolios or samples of their interiors.

Under Contract? A proper relationship with an interior designer begins with a contract laying out the responsibilities of both parties and the framework for what type of budget and timeframe the project will require. The fee structure should be clearly outlined and understood, including the pricing for materials, furnishings and construction, as well as hourly rates and retainers, if necessary.

Understanding? Is the interior designer addressing your goals, concerns, hopes and wishes? Having some inspirational references like photos, magazine ads, color swatches and drawings will give your designer a jumping off point in terms of what your expectations are for the look and aesthetic you are aiming for. The more communication before the work starts, the better.

Interior Designer or Interior Decorator

Interior designer or interior decorator.

What is the difference, for both professions you can go to school and earn some type of degree. Both provide decent paying jobs. They both also have a huge amount of creativity involved with them. So what is the difference?

Well an Interior decorator learns the following things.

Applying wallpaper,

painting walls and other surfaces,

choosing furniture and fittings,

Draft floor plans

Accessories.

Interior designers

Do all of the above and…

Design based on the environmental feel of the room

They can knock down walls.

They can design complete homes, up to a set number of feet.

They have a backround in architecture and know some engineering

They have knowledge of constructions codes.

Interior design in the US is not always regulated by the state, though many states do require a person calling themselves an Interior Designer to have schooling and go though other processes and test. Once you have decided to use an interior designer on your design project you will want to hire someone who is qualified, who shares your vision and who communicates clearly with you. Many people believe an interior designer simply chooses paint, furniture and accessories but you know they do so much more. Interior designers need to negotiate pricing on furniture, fixtures and accessories, read blueprints, hire contractors, and keep the project on time and on budget and more.

Begin the selection process by defining the geographic location, budget, scope and time frame for project completion. You will want to use this information when researching and interviewing potential designers to make sure they are a good fit for your project and your location.

Review the websites of your pool of interior designers. Call the candidates who particularly interest you and ask questions and take notes. Some general questions you should ask:

* How long have they been in business?

* Do they work alone or as a team?

* Do they have a field of specialty?

* What experience do they have with local building codes and the permit process?
